Speed up your wordpress website.

Three simple steps that will speed up your Wordpress website!

This is such a common complaint about wordpress but with the right hosting environment it is very easy to sort out.

Here are the 3 simple steps:

1. You need to host your website with a hosting provider that uses a web server called Litespeed (LSWS) which is a commercial replacement for the Apache webserver.

LSWS is fully compatible with anything that runs on Apache so there are no compatibility issues, what runs on Apache will run on Litespeed including your .htaccess rules.

You will see immediate speed improvements in PHP (the language Wordpress is written using) as LSWS typically parses (runs) PHP 4-5 times faster than Apache with PHP-FPM it is the fastest PHP Platform

Litespeed also gives you the fastest caching engine outperforming by double other Varnish based systems

2. The second thing you need to do is convert your website to use https (secure) rather than http (insecure) this opens your website to the speed of http/2 rather than http/1.1

This will give you an instant speed increase as the new http/2 standard is much faster than the older http/1.1

Find a host that provides free SSL certificates to save yourself some money.

Litespeed can serve http/2 over http and https pages however because of the drive to https pages the major browsers only use http/2 over https connections so you will only get this part of the benefit by switching to https and it is well worth the effort for the speed and indeed the ranking benefits.

If your visitor uses a browser only capable of http/1.1 then LSWS will detect this and serve it as http/1.1

Click to find out more about the difference between http1.1 and http/2 and run a simple live test to see it in action vs http/1.1

3. Remove or disable your current Wordpress caching plugin and install Litespeed Cache from add plugins in Wordpress which is pretty much install and go.

The only thing you will need to do if you are using Woocommerce is tell the plugin not to cache the cart contents which you do by adding woocommerce_items_in_cart to the cookie list in the do not cache tab and click save.

And that is all there is to do!

We regularly see massive gains in Wordpress load times for our customers with the above in place ranging from 7-10 second load times reduced to just 1 second on our website hosting platform and that is not the exception it is very common.

We have also seen 11 second load time reduce to sub 800ms on our VPS platform when LSWS is added.

So, there in a nutshell are three very simple steps to make your Wordpress website much quicker with very little effort!
